🌿 CO₂ equivalent

Context

The different greenhouse gases (GHGs) differ, among other things, in the amount of energy they are able to absorb and in their "lifetime" in the atmosphere. The "CO2 equivalent" is a unit created by the IPCC to compare the impacts of these different GHGs on global warming and to be able to add up their emissions.

The emission factors used are in CO2 equivalent (CO2e). They take into account other greenhouse gases than CO2 such as methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the most common in the transport sector. They also take into account emissions during the upstream and operational phases.

Emission Factors

The carbon emissions are calculated by multiplying energy consumption by the energy’s emission factor. The emission factor depends on the energy used. In Hiboo, you can select an energy from a list. Each energy on this list has an emission factor:

Energy name Emission factor Unit
Off-road diesel (default) 3,16 kg CO₂e / litre
Petrol-ethanol - E10 2,67 kg CO₂e / litre
On-road diesel - B100 1,21 kg CO₂e / litre
XTL - HVO100 - EasyPure 0,54 kg CO₂e / litre
Compressed natural gas 2,96 kg CO₂e / kg
Bio compressed natural gas 0,48 kg CO₂e / litre
Liquefied natural gas 3,29 kg CO₂e / kg
LPG for road vehicles 1,77 kg CO₂e / litre
Unleaded petrol 95 or 98 2,70 kg CO₂e / litre
Superethanol - E85 1,23 kg CO₂e / litre
Bioethanol - ED95 0,85 kg CO₂e / litre
Diesel - regular - B7 3,1 kg CO₂e / litre
Diesel - B30 2,63 kg CO₂e / litre
Electricity (Mainland France) 0,053 kg CO₂e / kWh

Definitions

Operating phase

This corresponds to the use of the equipment, and therefore to the combustion of the energy source (fuels)

Upstream phase

This corresponds to the activities carried out to provide the means of transport with its energy source (whether it is diesel, CNG, electricity, or else): it may therefore involve the extraction of oil, its refining, and the distribution of the fuel from the refinery to the pump.

CO₂e on Hiboo platform

<aside> 💡 The CO₂e is the carbon equivalent directly related to the fuel consumption of your equipment 👉 therefore, for equipment with no fuel consumption data, we will not be able to produce CO₂e data.

Where to access my equipment CO₂e emission data?

  1. The CO₂e emissions can be accessed on the profile page of an equipment next to the fuel consumed value since the CO₂ equivalent is directly linked to the diesel consumption of the equipment

  2. You can also find the cumulative CO₂e of your assets in the usage report.
